Myth 1: Trimming Your Lashes Makes Them Grow Longer

Fact: Trimming your eyelashes does not make them grow longer. Like all hair, eyelashes grow in a natural cycle with phases of growth, rest, and shedding. Cutting them does not speed up this cycle or make them thicker or longer. In fact, trimming can lead to uneven lashes and may even irritate your eyes.1

 


 

Myth 2: Castor Oil Promotes Eyelash Growth

Fact: Castor oil is often promoted as a natural remedy for eyelash growth, but there is no scientific evidence that it stimulates new lash growth. Its primary benefit is in its moisturizing and conditioning properties, which can help reduce breakage and improve the overall appearance of lashes. By strengthening and hydrating existing lashes, castor oil may help them look fuller over time. However, it does not generate new lash growth or increase length. Supporting true eyelash growth requires ingredients that work with the natural growth phase, and castor oil has not been clinically shown to do so.

A 2024 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology gave castor oil a Grade D, noting there are “insufficient studies reporting a significant difference in lash growth” and describing many claims as “mainly anecdotal.”2

Fact: Nutrition plays an important role in the health of your eyelashes, just as it does for your skin and hair. A balanced diet that includes adequate protein, leafy greens, and healthy fats helps supply the essential vitamins and minerals that support the natural growth cycle. While diet alone won’t make lashes grow overnight, consistently fueling your body with the right nutrients can help strengthen lashes and improve their overall appearance over time.4

 


 

Myth 5: Eyelash Curlers Cause Eyelash Loss

Fact: While eyelash curlers can cause damage if used improperly, when used correctly they shouldn’t harm your lashes. Always curl clean, dry lashes and avoid curling after applying mascara, as this can lead to breakage. Be sure to replace worn-out pads regularly and use gentle pressure. Additionally, if you have thin or fragile eyelashes, it’s best to avoid frequent use of tools like eyelash curlers, since this can increase the risk of damage.5
