The Truth About Lash Shedding

The Truth About Lash Shedding

Eyelash shedding is a natural and necessary part of the lash growth cycle. Similar to the hair on your scalp, your lashes grow, fall, and regenerate as part of a continuous renewal process. While the occasional lash on your pillow may be expected, understanding what qualifies as normal shedding and what may indicate excessive loss can help you care for your lash line and know when it may be time to take action.

At neuLASH®, we approach lash care as an essential part of overall self-care. What you apply to your body, and what you allow into it, makes a difference. That is why we are sharing the science behind lash shedding and explaining how our award-winning lash-enhancing serum supports the appearance of stronger, healthier-looking lashes throughout every phase of the lash cycle.

The Lash Growth Cycle: What’s Normal?

Eyelashes follow a three-phase cycle: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest/shedding).1 Continue below to see a closer look into these three stages.

  • Anagen (Growth Phase): This is when the lash is actively growing. It can last anywhere from 30 to 45 days. Only a portion of your lashes are in this phase at any given time.

  • Catagen (Transition Phase): In this short phase (usually 2–3 weeks), lash growth stops, and the follicle begins to shrink. If a lash falls out during this phase, it won’t start growing back immediately.

  • Telogen (Resting/Shedding Phase): Lashes in this phase are fully grown and eventually fall out to make room for new growth. This phase can last more than 100 days, which is why you might notice a few lashes shedding here and there, it’s a sign the cycle is doing its job.2

It is entirely normal to lose between one and five lashes each day. Because each lash follows its own growth cycle, shedding typically occurs gradually rather than in noticeable clusters, unless the natural cycle is disrupted by external factors or underlying concerns.

What Can Disrupt the Lash Cycle?

Several factors can contribute to increased lash shedding, including harsh makeup habits, improper removal of lash extensions, and exposure to environmental stressors like sun and pollution. Lifestyle influences such as poor nutrition, limited sleep, and elevated stress levels may also affect the body’s ability to support healthy lash growth2. And as part of the natural aging process, growth cycles may slow, causing lashes to appear finer or more sparse over time.

Being mindful of these factors can help you protect your natural lashes, and better understand what’s normal versus what needs attention.

When to Be Concerned About Lash Loss

A few lashes here and there? Normal. Sudden thinning, bald patches, or irritation at the lash line? That may warrant a closer look.

If you’re experiencing excessive lash loss or discomfort, it’s best to consult a dermatologist or licensed healthcare provider. Lash loss may sometimes be linked to underlying skin conditions, cosmetic lash procedures, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal changes, or even certain medications.3
